Hibiscus 'Mahogany Splendor'
This is one of the plants with most impact in our trial gardens during the summer. Beautiful maple-leaved foliage in deep burgundy was the ultimate attention grabber of the public visiting Fordhook Farm. Shiny tall plants with distinguished Japanese maple look were glowing in the sun, adding color and texture to the landscape in perfect order with the ornamental grasses. Extreme weather of the summer made them even more beautiful, as 'Mahogany Splendor' does well in very wet conditions. The foliage is even more impressive, growing in harmony with the pink globes and golden sparkle of Gomphrena fireworks.
The Burpee company was founded in Philadelphia in 1876 by an 18 year-old with a passion for plants and animals and a mother willing to lend him $1000 dollars of "seed money" to get started in business. Within 25 years he had developed the largest, most progressive seed company in America. By 1915 mailing a million catalogues a year to America's gardeners.
